French people tend to be more formal and place more emphasis on courtesy than you might be used to.

| Thanks for your help. (formal) | Merci pour votre aide. | |

| Thanks a lot. | Merci beaucoup. | |
| Many thanks. | Mille Mercis. | |
| You’re welcome | De rien. | |
| That is very kind | C’est très gentil. | |
| How kind of you. (formal) | C’est très gentil de votre part. | |
| How kind of you. (casual) | C’est très gentil de ta part. |
Use all of the above phrases liberally, and you’ll find that people will treat you better.
