Salut, ça va?

Welcome to the continuation of our Rocket French 6 Day course! For the rest of these weekly newsletters we will continue on with some of the basic principles involved with the French language.

This newsletter looks at ways of asking a question in French. In English, we often use phrases such as “isn’t it?” or “aren’t they?” as well as change the order of a sentence around when asking a question. For example, we might say “its cold, isn’t it?” or “is it cold?” The same type of principle applies in French. Let’s look at some examples of this:

It’s cold, isn’t it? Il fait froid, n’est ce pas?
Is it cold? Fait-il froid?

This formula works with any question. Look at the examples below, starting with a statement and then two types of questions:

» Audio 2   Double Click Play To Hear Audio

I am hungry! J’ai faim!
Are you hungry? As-tu faim?
He is hungry, isn’t he? Il a faim, n’est ce pas?

Example

You will remember from previous newsletters that sometimes one word is all you need to get your point across! This applies to questions as well.

» Audio 3   Double Click Play To Hear Audio

How much?, or How many? Combien?
When? Quand?
Why? Pourquoi?
Where is it? C’est ou?

Join me next week when I talk about standard replies to common questions!

À très bientôt! (See you very soon!)
