When it comes to sports, there are two ways that the French do it! “Faire un sport”, literally means “making a sport” or “jouer à quelquechose” means “to play at something”. You can add a wide selection of activities to either of those phrases. For example, “faire du vélo”, "to cycle", or “jouer au volley”, "to play volleyball".

To do a sport Faire un sport

To cycle Faire du vélo
To play volleyball Jouer au volley

Example

Let’s use the phrases you have learnt about asking questions and put them together with the subject of sports.

We are going to play football (soccer) Nous allons jouer au foot
Go do some cycling, it’s a fine day! Va faire du vélo, il fait beau!
When are you going to swim? Quand vas tu faire de la natation?
Where is the game? C’est où le match?
Do you play tennis? Jouez vous au tennis?

Imagine you are watching a game somewhere in France. This is what you might hear people around you saying about a soccer match!
