Salut, ça va?

A good way to begin practicing a new language is to talk about people who are familiar to us – a subject we usually know quite well in our own language is family. Gender principles used in the French language become more evident when speaking about people, and differences between feminine and masculine spelling and descriptions in French are easier to spot.

Let’s look at the immediate family members:

My parents or My relatives Mes parents
My sister lives in France Ma soeur habite en France
My brother is tall Mon frère est grand
My wife Ma femme
My husband Mon mari
My boyfriend Mon copain
My girlfriend Ma copine
My cousins Mes cousins

Example

Notice that in English we always use “my”, whatever person or group of people we are talking about. In French, “my” takes on three different forms depending on the person or thing in question! “Ma” refers to a woman or a feminine item, “Mon” is used for a man or masculine item, and “Mes” is used when we talk about more than one person or item! Have a good look at the above list and begin to make the connections about gender rules and you will be half-way to understanding how French people think and speak!

Next week we take a new direction... literally! We will talk about asking directions and other important phrases that will get you to the place you need to go!

À très bientôt! (See you very soon!)
