Finding your way around any new town means looking out for signs that you may not be familiar with, and doing it in a new language means really paying attention! Here are some common signs and French words for those essential activities we do when traveling through a town or city.

| Pedestrian zone | La zone piétone |
| Stop! | Arrêtez! |
| By bus | Par autobus |
| By car | Par voiture |
| By train | Par train |
| On foot | À pied |
| To park the car | Garer la voiture |
| Where can I park around here? | Où peut on se garer par ici? |

And a sign that doesn’t always give the warning it intends to, because “attention” in English doesn’t mean the same thing……

And my favorite, which seen in many French towns, always manages to confuse foreigners (even more)….
| All directions | Toutes directions |
It really means “anywhere other than town”!
