How To Use A Verb
In order to conjugate a regular verb, you first need to identify the verb “ stem ”. The stem is the part of the verb that, in most cases, remains constant. Find the stem by taking the infinitive of the verb and removing the –en, or –n ending.
| Verb | Stem |
| brauchen (to need) | brauch- |
| bezahlen (to pay) | bezahl- |
| kaufen (to buy) | kauf- |
| segeln (to sail) | segel- |
When you have the stem by itself, have a look at the table of verb endings that we covered in Lesson 3.2 and add the appropriate ending, according to who is performing the action. Remember that verbs ending in –en conjugate differently to the ones ending in –n. “Sein” and “sprechen”, the two verbs you have learned before, are both irregular because their stem changes as well. We’ll cover that further down the track.
