Whether you are traveling to a German speaking country or simply interacting with Germans, acting in a courteous way will win you friends and gain you respect. Germans tend to be more formal and place more emphasis on courtesy than you might be used to.
Spend some time with this lesson and listen to the link below to hear basic phrases like “bitte”, “vielen Dank”, “gerne” and “Entschuldigung”. They are essential phrases to memorize before you travel to a German speaking country.

| Excuse me please. (casual) | Entschuldige bitte. |
| Excuse me please. (very polite) | Verzeihung. |
| Sorry. | Entschuldigung. |
| I’m sorry about that. | Das tut mir leid. |
| Thanks for your help. (formal) | Vielen Dank für Ihre Hilfe. |
| Thanks for your help. (casual) | Vielen Dank für deine Hilfe. |
| Thanks a lot. | Vielen Dank. |
| Many thanks. | Danke sehr. |
| You’re welcome | Gerne. |
| That is very kind | Das ist sehr freundlich. |
| How kind of you. (formal) | Wie nett von Ihnen. |
| How kind of you. (casual) | Wie nett von dir. |
Use all of the above phrases liberally, and you’ll find that people will treat you better.
