Welcome to the Rocket German Newsletter Series! In today’s newsletter you’re going to learn useful words and phrases that you will need when checking in at the airport. To start with being able to understand the airport signs will make you feel more relaxed with German. But that’s not all. You might want to know how long the flight is, whether they will serve a hot meal, whether you can have an aisle seat and much more.

Let’s start with the basics.

Now, here are the important questions that you will need when checking in at the counter (“der Schalter”). Listen to each word and its English translation and repeat the words aloud.

arrow When do I have to be at the gate? Wann muß ich am Gate sein?
arrow How long is the flight? Wie lange ist der Flug?
arrow How long is the stop over? Wie lange ist der Zwischenstop?
arrow Will you serve a hot meal? Werden Sie eine warme Mahlzeit servieren?
arrow Is the flight very busy? Ist der Flug sehr voll?
arrow Do I need a visa? Brauche ich ein Visum?
arrow How long is the visa valid for? Wie lange ist das Visum gültig?
arrow How many pieces of luggage can I take? Wie viele Gepäckstücke kann ich mitnehmen?

Some people prefer window seats, some want to sit close to the aisle. I always ask for a window seat, that way I can get a first impression of the city we are going to land in, from above. Whichever one you prefer, here are the German words for it…

arrow I would like to have a window seat, please. Ich möchte bitte einen Fensterplatz haben.
arrow I would like to have an aisle seat, please Ich möchte bitte einen Gangplatz haben.

Here are some possible answers you might get…

arrow You have to be at the gate 15 minutes prior to departure. Sie müssen 15 Minuten vor Abflug am Gate sein.
arrow Unfortunately, we don’t have any window seats left. Leider haben wir keine freien Fensterplätze mehr.
arrow You won’t need a visa. Sie brauchen kein Visum.
arrow We’ll serve a cold snack and dinner. Wir werden einen kalten Snack und Abendessen servieren.
arrow You can only take one piece of hand luggage. Sie können nur ein Stück Handgepäck mitnehmen.
arrow Your luggage is too heavy. Ihr Gepäck ist zu schwer.
