Willkommen! Welcome to the sixth and final day of the Rocket German 6 Day Course!

In this lesson you’re going to learn how to actually do something in German, like order a cup of coffee or a tea. This lesson will conclude with three powerful words that everyone traveling to a German-speaking country needs to know. Bist du bereit? Are you ready?

Getting What You Want

The three most important verbs in German for you to learn to get around in a German-speaking country are I need, I want, and I would like.

Ich brauche
I need.
Ich will
I want.
Ich möchte
I would like.

Use “ich brauche” to tell people that you need a room in a hotel, need help, or need to catch a taxi!

Use “ich will” to tell people that you want one of these bagels, want to go shopping, or want to do a tour.

Use “ich möchte” to order food at a restaurant or to offer an opinion about what you would like to do.

Take a look at the conversation you learned in the previous part of the course to see how these three important phrases are used.

Nik: Ich brauche Hilfe.
Paul: Womit?
Nik: Ich will etwas Warmes zu trinken.
Paul: Was möchtest du?
Nik: Ich möchte einen Kaffee.
Paul: Mit Milch und Zucker?
Nik: Gib mir beides, danke
Paul: Fertig. Ich nehme einen Tee .

In English, this conversation goes as follows:

Nik: I need help.
Paul: With what?
Nik: I want something to drink.
Paul: What would you like?
Nik: I would like a (cup of) coffee.
Paul: With milk and sugar?
Nik: With both, thanks.
Paul: All set. I’ll have a (cup of) tea.

How to Order in German

When you’re ordering food at a café or restaurant, it’s only polite to tell the waiter what you’d like to order… rather than what you want. When traveling in a foreign country, you don’t want to be seen as demanding! So it’s good to get into the habit of using ich möchte.

It’s often used to request something in a polite way. For example…

Ich möchte ein Glas Milch. I’d like a glass of milk.
Ich möchte einen Kaffee trinken. I’d like to drink a coffee.
Ich möchte zwei Kaffee. I’d like two coffees.

Always include the magic word in your request that will increase your chances of better, faster, and more gracious service: bitte... please!

Bitte. Please.

For example, Ich möchte bitte einen Kaffee. I’d like a coffee, please.

When the waiter returns your order, it’s only polite to add, “Thank you.”

Danke. Thank you.
Please

Something to Drink

Ordering etwas zu trinken, or something to drink, is one of the most basic ordering experiences and is a good way to try out your German. Imagine you are in a coffee shop. What will you order and how will you say it? Here are some options.

Ich möchte…

…einen Kaffee. I’d like a (cup of) coffee.
…einen Kaffee mit Milch. I’d like a coffee with milk.
…einen Kaffee mit Milch und Zucker. I’d like a coffee with milk and sugar.

…einen Tee. I’d like a (cup of) tea.
…einen Tee mit Milch. I’d like a tea with milk.
…einen Tee mit Zitrone. I’d like a tea with lemon.

If you want to streamline your German even further, you don’t actually have to tell a waiter, “I would like a cup of coffee.” You could just say, “A coffee, please.”

Einen Kaffee, bitte. A coffee, please.

I Need Help!

If you are going to spend any time in a German-speaking country, you need to know how to ask for help. So memorize this essential word:

Hilfe Help

If you don’t remember any other words from this section, remember that if you’re in trouble you can always shout, “Hilfe!” and be understood.

If the help you need isn’t of an essential nature, here are the two most useful phrases you can have at your disposal.

Help

Ich brauche Hilfe. I need help.
Können Sie mir helfen? Can you help me?

If you need help with something , just add “mit“ and the thing you need help with. Look at the following sentences. To understand them, you need to know that “den Koffern” are the suitcases.

Ich brauche Hilfe mit den Koffern. I need help with the suitcases.
Können Sie mir mit den Koffern helfen? Can you help me with the suitcases?

Let’s see how you could put these words into use. Imagine that you have just checked into a hotel. The bellboy (der Page) asks you if you need help with your bags.

der Page: Brauchen Sie Hilfe mit den Koffern?

You: Ich brauche keine Hilfe, danke.

Did you understand that? You told the bellboy that you didn’t need help, thank you. Or, you could have just said, “ Nein, danke.” No, thanks.

Bellboy

It’s nice to be able to ask for help in these circumstances, but in real emergencies you will need something a bit stronger than, “I need help.” Here are three powerful words that will catch everyone’s attention

Hilfe! Help!
Polizei! Police!
Feuer! Fire!
