Occupations in German

Talking About Occupations in German

Chef

In German all occupations have a feminine and a masculine form. In most cases the feminine form ends in –in and sometimes features “Umlaute” as well. “Umlaute” are the little dots above the “ä”, “ö” or “ü”. For exam

German
English
Masculine form
Feminine form
Masculine/ feminine form
der Kellner die Kellnerin waiter/ waitress
der Gärtner die Gärtnerin gardener
der Arzt die Ärztin doctor
der Lehrer die Lehrerin teacher
der Koch die Köchin cook
der Designer die Designerin designer
der Architekt die Architektin architect
der Ingenieur die Ingenieurin engineer
der Autor die Autorin author
der Verkäufer die Verkäuferin sales assistant
der Übersetzer die Übersetzerin translator
der Musiker die Musikerin musician

However there are some exceptions, for example

German
English
Masculine form
Feminine form
Masculine/ feminine form
der Angestellte die Angestellte employee
der Krankenpfleger die Krankenschwester nurse
der Vorgesetzter die Vorgesetzte superior
der Friseur die Friseuse hairdresser

Zum Beispiel:

Ich bin Übersetzerin I’m a translator
Er ist Architekt. He is an architect
Sie ist Ärztin. She is a doctor
Du bist Lehrer . You are a teacher.

As you can see you don’t need to include an article, like “a” or “an”, in German, when talking about your occupation, whereas in English you do.
