To Be Or Not To Be

In English we know the forms of the verb “to be” without thinking. I am. You are. We are. They are.

In German, each verb (action word) changes depending on who the verbs refers to ( I, you, she, we and so on) as well as the tense (such as present, past, or future). These changes are called conjugations .

Have a look at the conjugations of the verb “sein” to be in the present tense.

Thinking

Singular

ich bin

I am

du bist

you are (casual)

er ist he is
sie ist

she is

es ist it is

Plural

wir sind

we are

ihr seid

you are (casual)

sie sind they are
Sie sind you are (polite)

“Sein” is a very important verb that you will be using all the time.

Zum Beispiel:

Das Wetter ist schön.

The weather is nice.

Das ist mein Bruder.

That is my brother.

Sie sind eingeladen. You are invited (formal).
Wir sind Freunde. We are friends.
