Hola and welcome to the Rocket Spanish Newsletter Series!

Is it going to rain, snow or hail? Will the sun shine all day? Will it be a great day for going to the beach or shall we go to the art gallery instead? You might like to know what the weather is doing before making any plans. The first thing you notice when talking about the weather in Spanish is the use of "hace" and “está”. You can find out about the weather by asking the following questions…

What’s the weather like? ¿Qué tiempo hace?
How’s the weather? ¿Cómo está el tiempo?
How’s the climate? ¿Cómo está el clima?
How’s it like outside? ¿Cómo está por afuera?

There are a lot of possible answers to that question. Here are the most common ones…

It’s sunny. Hace sol.
It’s hot. Hace calor.
It’s cold. Hace frío.
It’s windy. Hace viento. / Está ventoso.
It’s muggy. Está abochornado.
It’s misty. Hay neblina.
It’s cloudy. Hace nubes. / Está nublado.
It’s sleeting. Cae aguanieve.
It’s foggy. Hay niebla.
It’s humid. Hay humedad.

You can use the word “mucho” (very) for all of the above phrases to emphasize that it’s not just cold or warm, but very cold or very warm.

For example:

It’s very cold. Hace mucho frio.
It’s very warm. Hace mucho calor.
It’s very windy. Hace mucho viento.

When talking about rain you can use the following expressions …

It’s raining. Está lloviendo.
It’s drizzling. Está lloviznando.
It’s raining cats and dogs. Está lloviendo a cántaros.

For a farmer rain might be all he needs, whereas a soccer team might be hoping for a sunny day. Here are some more common phrases that describe the weather.

It’s bad weather. Hace mal tiempo.
It’s good weather. Hace buen tiempo.
It’s a sunny day. Hace un día soleado.
It’s a clear day. Hace un día despejado.
It’s a stormy day. Hace un día tormentoso.

Here are some words that describe cold, rainy, stormy – unsettled weather conditions…

Unsettled weather Un tiempo revuelto
A frosty night Una noche de helada
A hailstorm Una granizada
A light covering of snow Una fina capa de nieve
A hurricane Un huracán
A thunder Un trueno
A streak of lightning Un rayo
A cloudburst Un chaparrón
A gale Un viento fuerte
A gust of wind Una racha

Now, here’s a fun word you’ll surely use to say “showers”…Chubascos…

Sleet showers Chubascos de aguanieve
Snow showers Chubascos de nieve
Scattered showers Chubascos aislados

Here are some few words that describe nice, sunny, beautiful weather conditions…

A rainbow El arco iris
A breeze La brisa
A sea breeze La brisa marina

And when you want to say “Nice Weather!” in Spanish…

What a nice weather! Que clima tan agradable!
