Hola and welcome to the Rocket Spanish Newsletter Series!

If you are asking what a person is like you might hear anything as an answer. A person may be short, tall, fat, skinny, nice, mean, rich or poor. All of these qualities are descriptions and this is what this lesson is about. Let’s think about how we might describe a person. What about the hair?

	Sergio has short hair.	Sergio tiene pelo corto.
	Elisa has long hair.	Elisa tiene pelo largo.
	She has medium-length hair.	Ella tiene pelo medio largo.
	He has straight hair.	El tiene pelo lacio.
	She has wavy hair.	Ella tiene pelo ondulado.
	Itzel has curly hair.	Itzel tiene pelo rizado.
	Maria has chestnut hair.	Maria tiene pelo castaño.
	Pedro has dark hair.	Pedro tiene pelo oscuro.
	Olivia has blond hair.	Olivia tiene pelo rubio.
	Rocio has red hair.	Rocio tiene pelo pelirrojo.

And for a bald person, you can say…

He is bald.

El está calvo.

What about the eye and skin color?

	He has brown eyes.	El tiene ojos marrones.
	She has green eyes.	Ella tiene ojos verdes.
	He has blue eyes.	El tiene ojos azules.
	She has blue-grey eyes.	Ella tiene ojos azul-grises.
	She is dark-skinned.	Ella tiene piel morena.
	He is fair-skinned.	El tiene piel blanca.
	She is pale-skinned.	Ella tiene piel pálida.

What about other features, like height and weight?

	She is short.	Ella es baja.
	He is tall.	El es alto.
	She is thin.	Ella es delgada.
	He is fat.	El es gordo.

Is there a particular feature that distinguishes them from other people?

	She has a wide mouth.	Ella tiene una boca ancha.
	He has a narrow mouth.	El tiene una boca pequeña.
	She has dimples.	Ella tiene hoyüelos.
	He has a mole.	El tiene un lunar.
	She has a birth mark.	Ella tiene una mancha de nacimiento.
	He has freckles.	El tiene pecas.
	She has thick lips.	Ella tiene labios carnosos.
	He has bushy eyebrows.	El tiene cejas pobladas.
	She has big ears.	Ella tiene orejas grandes.
	He has a scar.	El tiene una cicatriz.
	She has a high forehead.	Ella tiene una frente despejada.

There are a few expressions to describe the type of nose your friend may have...

	She has a Roman nose.	Ella tiene la nariz aguileña.
	He has a button nose.	El tiene la nariz chata.
	She has a big nose.	Ella tiene la nariz grande.
	He has a boxer’s nose.	El tiene la nariz de boxeador.
	She has an upturned nose.	Ella tiene la nariz respingona.
	He has a broken nose.	El tiene la nariz torcida.

To describe someone with a beer belly, say...

He has a beer belly.

El tiene la curva de la felicidad.

Which literally means, he has the curve of happiness!

Now, what about other abilities and features?

	She is sweet.	Ella es linda.
	He is handsome.	El es guapo.
	She is pretty.	Ella es bella.
	He is ugly.	El es feo.
	She is well dressed.	Ella está bien arreglada.
	He is scruffy.	El está desaliñado.

What sort of a person is she? What kind of personality does he have?

	She is open / frank.	Ella es abierta / franca.
	He is quiet.	El es callado.
	She is cheerful.	Ella es alegre.
	She is ambitious.	Ella es ambiciosa.
	He is friendly.	El es simpático.
	She is intelligent.	Ella es inteligente.
	He is patient.	El is paciente.
	She is affectionate.	Ella es cariñosa.
	He is clumsy.	El es torpe.
	She is serious.	Ella es seria.
	He is kind.	El es amable.
	She is hard-working.	Ella es trabajadora.
	He is sensitive.	El es sensible.
	She is lazy.	Ella es perezosa.
	He is funny.	El es divertido.

If you spot someone who’s very beautiful on the street, you can comment to your friend…

She’s really beautiful!

¡Qué guapa!

And your friend (who happens to be a girl) can turn to you and say...

He’s not bad either!

¡El no está nada mal tampoco!
