Country Profile: Peru

- By Mauricio Evlampieff

For me, Peru is a wonderland. It’s a destination that I’ve always wanted to go to, but as of yet have never had the chance.

The enigmatic atmosphere of Peru calls people from all over the world to visit this marvelous but troubled destination.

Peru, I would have to say, is one of the most culturally rich countries you will find in South America. The Peruvian Andes feel untouched by time. The indigenous people of this region still maintain a traditional way of life and still speak the old language, Quechua, that their ancestors spoke before the Spanish arrived.

No one who goes to Peru can miss visiting those incredible pre-Colombian sites like the city of the clouds, Machu Picchu, or gazing upon the world’s highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca. Just make sure to take precautions and adapt yourself to the high altitude first!

Peru is a hiker’s paradise, with a vast amount of trails available to tourists. These range from day walks to several-week-long backpacking trips through ancient trails, Amazonian rainforest, some of the world’s tallest snow-peaked mountains, deserts and canyons. Hiking the Inca Trail is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Another aspect of Peruvian culture that I love is their traditional folk music. If you haven’t yet heard the natural and beautiful sounds of their wind instruments, or the thrilling and fast melody of the charango with the peaceful beat of their drums, then I recommend that you investigate some of the music of this country.

Peru is a country for the adventurous of spirit and the mystical of heart. Cuzco used to be the capital of the vast Incan empire before the arrival of the Spanish, and you can feel the history of this ancient people in the stones and ruins.
