Spanish question words – Inflection

Unlike English, however, you don’t raise the pitch of your voice at the end of a question in Spanish. Rather, you ask the interrogative word in a higher-pitched voice and drop your pitch for the rest of the question.

Funky Punctuation Marks

Punctuation marks in Spanish are almost exactly the same as English—except for two. If you wish to add a question mark (?) at the end of a sentence, you must also add an upside-down question (¿) mark at the beginning.

¿Cómo te va? - (How’s it going?)

Download
¿Cómo te va?.
How’s it going?

Additionally, if you wish to use an exclamation point (!), you must add an upside-down exclamation point (¡) at the beginning of the exclamation.

¡Bien hecho! - (Well done!)

Download
¡Bien hecho!
Well done!

Using a Statement as a Question

As in English, you may use a statement to ask a question as long as you raise the pitch of your voice at the end of the question.

Por ejemplo:

Download
¿Tienes calor?
Are you hot?
Download
¿Estamos contentos?
Are we happy?

Note that in English the order of the subject and verb are switched when converting a statement to a question. The same is true in Spanish. When asking a question, the order is as follows:

¿Complete verb(s) + subject + object?

Por ejemplo:

Asking “Really? Is That True?”

Download
Maria y Juan terminan primero
Mary and John finish first
Download
¿Terminan Maria y Juan primero?
Do Mary and John finish first?
Download
Ustedes tienen mucha comida
You guys have a lot of food
Download
¿Tienen Uds. mucha comida?
Do you have a lot of food?

Often, in English, when we want to know whether or not something is true, we make a statement then add, “Right?” or “Really?” or “No?” For example:

You’re going to take the garbage out, right? The museum is on the left, no?

You can do the same thing in Spanish:

El museo está a la izquierda, ¿no?

However, instead of saying “right” or “really,” you’ll ask, “True?”

Vas a sacar la basura, ¿verdad?

Simply remember to raise the pitch of your voice when you say “¿no?” or “¿verdad?”

Download
El carro tiene gasolina, ¿verdad?
The car has gas, right?
Download
El vestido es muy bonito, ¿no?
The dress is very pretty, no?

I have had the Rocket Spanish Program for about 5 years now. In this time I have moved around the country between three different states and completed my master's degree. However, no matter how busy I seem to become, I have always had the desire to come back to these courses. I have tried other courses and for me, Rocket Spanish is the easiest and most realistic. It teaches the language the way it is spoken and provides so much to help me perfect my usage. I really enjoy it and this time, I'm not stopping until I feel can carry on a conversation in Spanish as if I were speaking English. As my grandson says when he really likes something, "I loooooooove Rocket Spanish!

I've been working on learning Spanish on and off for the past 10 years, and in the process I've tried several different products, including audio CDs, books and even classroom courses. Rocket Spanish is the best thing I've come across yet.

Rocket Spanish takes a comprehensive approach to language learning and the thing that I like most is that it focuses on getting you comfortable with conversational Spanish. The audio lessons place you in realistic situations and walk you through conversations sentence by sentence and even word by word. By the time you get to the end of an audio lesson you're very comfortable with all the words, phrases and concepts presented, and each of the lessons builds on the last one.

I like how the concepts are all explained by a native English speaker and the pronunciation practice is all done with a native Spanish speaker.

In addition to the audio lessons, Rocket Spanish also provides you with written lessons to help expand your vocabulary and teach you grammar. The approach is a very simple and natural way to learn the language. I've been enjoying the course very much and look forward to my lessons every day.

I've tried *competitor* and even considered purchasing their Spanish language software but I'm glad that I found Rocket Spanish before spending hundreds of dollars on a less effective program.

I would encourage anyone who wants to learn Spanish to try Rocket Spanish. It is the most effective program and the best deal that I have come across yet.

I like the phrase master game, because it has made it easier to pick out words from a sentence. Whereas before, they all just blurred together. This has made it easier to speak with friends, and use context clues in cases where I don't understand the full sentence.

Hello, my name is Raymon West. I just wanted to say that I would definitely recommend Rocket Spanish to other people, I love it, it's a great program. The benefits of it is that I've been listening to it in the car as I drive, playing the games and things and it's really helped me improve my Spanish skills, especially in the area of grammar. I had some rudimentary Spanish skills but I've discovered I wasn't speaking properly and this has really helped me improve my grammar.

I live in Texas... South Texas actually, so this is helpful in communicating with the Spanish speaking people that live in my area and I also travel to Mexico quite a bit and I enjoy speaking my enhanced Spanish there now, so I really appreciate it. If other people want to buy Rocket Spanish, I think that it would be a great purchase, I would highly recommend it, I've tried other Spanish programs and this one is definitely the best. So once again, thanks for a great product.

Mauricio, your course is fantastic! I was not a Spanish speaker at all (despite living for years in Houston, Texas where Spanish is pretty commonly spoken). I downloaded your course on the Internet (it was recommended by an Internet review site) and put the lessons on my iPod. For about two months, I listened to the language lessons while I drove and I played the vocabulary game on my computer.

It was tons of fun and I learned enough Spanish to easily get me through a week's vacation in Saltillo and Real de Catorce, Mexico.

The lessons were perfect. On so many occasions, I would find myself in a situation and I was living out the contents of one of your lessons. I even negotiated the price of an antique painting in Saltillo. "No es barato, es muy caro" (sorry if I butchered the spelling, I learned by listening), saved me $25, which put me part of the way towards recouping the cost of the lessons!

Your classes gave me the fluency and confidence to drive to Mexico and negotiate hotel reservations, restaurants, driving directions, and even some limited social situations. I cannot recommend the course more highly and I am now listening to all the lessons again to pick up smaller things that I didn't focus on my first time through.

This photo is of me on my balcony in Real de Catorce, a partially inhabited ghost town high up in the Sierra Madres. We had a blast and Rocket Spanish was a big part of making our vacation a huge success.
