What is proper usage of the words "Tempo" and "volta" to express time?

Tempo = length of time. example - per lungo tempo - for a long time
Volta = point in time. example - e 'la prima volta - it is the first time

Ciao Chuck,
the English word "time" in Italian can be translated in many different ways.
Here below I specified the most common only:
-"tempo" as
Example: "per un periodo di tempo" means "for a period of time"
Example: "per molto tempo" means "for a long time"
-"ora" as
Example: "Che ora è?" or "Che ore sono?" are the translation of "what time is it?"
Example: "È ora di andare a casa" means "It's time to go home"
-"volta" as
Example: "quest'anno sono andata al mare una volta sola" means "this year I've been to the beach one time only (or just once)"
Example: "la prossima volta paghi tu!" means "next time you pay!"
