Beber and tomar both mean "to drink". Beber is used mostly in Spain and tomar is used a lot in South America. Tomar also means "to take".

That works (I need some drink), but perhaps you could say "necesito algo para beber" (I need something to drink).

Do a search for "beber" using the search box at the top of the page. I think you will find it interesting! Go through the threads and you'll see - some say that tomar is used more often with alcoholic drinks, some say it's used more often with non-alcoholic drinks. Basically they are pretty much interchangable. Interesting... I'm going to take a coffee and drink it! (Voy a tomar un café y beberlo!)
