I was wondering if people who retire to France from other places learn the language. I don't know if i'm too old to learn (59). Finding out if retirees learn the language would answer my question. There must be people who retire to France. Do they learn the language?

I am 70 and I am learning Spanish. You are just a kid. Sure you can learn. If you move there and are immersed in the language, I understand that is the best way to learn, but of course taking Rocket French to learn some of the basics would give you a big head start on it.

Hi Ray, don't know what you are worried about I'm learning French both on here and also at the Open Univercity as well as night school. I don't live in France but my sister and her husband do and they speak very good french by the way I am in my 70's as well so I should bite the bullet and go for it, you'll probably be glad you did.

Hi Ray... no you are not too old... one is never too old to learn... well that is what I think anyway... I'm 55 years old woman from Iceland and I've been learning French on and off for the last 10 years. I always quit and start over again ... always on step 1... but this time I'm going to go all the way... thanks to Rocket French. I also want stay in France for a year or so... ohhhh I so want to do that.......

I'm 61 and have just recently joined Rocket French. I don't expect to become fluent in French but I wish to learn enough to conduct research on my wife's Quebec and France ancestors. The research will entail both visits to Quebec as well as trying to obtain information from Quebec French Canadian family tree websites.

Hi Ray I've been studying different languages all my life and I'm in my fifties. In addition to French, I'm also studying Arabic. There's no age limit for learning new things.

I'm 68, learning French and enjoying it. One never stop learning.

One thing that's screwing me up a little is that I know some Italian by virtue of having lived in Italy for 3 years. Sometimes when I'm practicing French I find myself slipping back into Italian. I can already see myself checking into a hotel in Marieville and saying Buon Giorno instead of Bonjour.

age is just a number , i will say give it a go.

Hi Ray, I am around your age and I just started with Rocket French. I have a handicap, you see I grew up in a home where French Creole was spoken. I never knew how to write or read French. Could you imagine the embarassement when people ask what does that say and I would have to admit I didn't know. Remain motivated and it will come to you. I wish I had the formal training earlier in life. It's never too late.

Sure, you're never too old. I've studied Chinese and now I'm studying Japanese. I'll give it a shot during a solo trip to Japan next november! I'm also 50+. I've studied Russian, German, English and French before. My mother tongue is Dutch b.t.w.
