salut all, I was just wondering how interesting it would be to find out where some of the members who are studying Rocket French live. I would love to hear from some of you at least to know where you live, what country etc. Since we are all learning together, it would be nice to be unified at least to the point of knowing a little about each other. of course I guess there are too many people studying the course to get to know many people. Sometimes I feel isolated when taking this course, it would nice to talk to someone about how their progress is coming along etc. Just a thought. anyone interested? merci, gary wages

Salut Gary,
I am from Australia and have been doing Rocket French since January 2010.
Fortunately my work requires a lot of driving so I am able to listen and practice my French most days.
My retention has improved considerably since I began writing down a lot of the lessons and then referring back to those notes whenever necessary.
I have great difficulty understanding much of what is being said whenever I watch French news on t.v or a French movie, usually a word here and there is about it at the moment.
I am looking forward to travelling to France in May and putting some of what I have learnt into practice, I don't expect to be able to hold lengthy conversations with the locals, but I am confident of being able to ask relevant questions in relation to directions, accommodaton, dinner etc.
I am thoroughly enjoying the course and only wish that I had started it sooner.
Au revoir.
Bill.

Hi Bill, I understand your situation about not understanding French while listening to the tv or French Radio. I listen to radio french international from Paris, ( I am in North Carolina) USA. and I get some of what is being said, but i just like to hear the flow of the language. I too plan to go to France, but I am giving myself two years to learn before I go. Thanks for the reply. Gary

Salut Bill and Gary,

there is no better way to learn a language than reading a book or watching movies in the original language.
All this will help to get use to the sound of it.
A good idea is using the forum to interact with other students in French.
You can start introducing yourself, your name, where you are from, what's your job, etc.. for example.

Amusez-vous!

Hi Gary & Bill

I like your idea about getting to know some of our buddies who are taking this course online. I am a Malaysian and live in Malaysia.

I use to work for a French company till I resigned last year. Learning French had been something that I had wanted to master but never got to the stage of being able to conduct an interactive conversation least to say even coming to the stage of understanding a conversation that is taking place between 2 people i.e. as a listener.

I can read and understand French a bit but writing with the correct annotations is still a challenge and listening or responding speedily in an interactive conversation is far from it. Though I signed up for the course last year, I have not been consistent but hope to rectify this an become more active so that I can get somewhere with this language else I've told myself that I'll have to keep learning even if I'm 70! haha!

Salut à tous le monde.

Learning a language needs patience and practice.
It is a very good idea to listen to the French radio and read books in French.
This help to improve your vocabulary and get more familiar with some expressions.
I'd be nice if you can try to introduce yourself writing in French.
Where do you live? what is your job? or simply write about your holiday in France!

All the best for your French learning to everybody.
À bientôt.

Salut à tout le monde!

a new section has been added to the forum: it's called "conversation in French".
You can introduce yourself, speak about your travel in France... all in French!
A good way to interact with other students practicising your French.

I hope this helps

Hi Somdeb,

I am from India and presently staying in Paris. I have just started the course but since I am located in Paris, it's fun learing the language since everyday I discover that I am able to understand a word or two or may be a small sentence when I hear the French talking in a cafe or in the shopping complex. To be associated with the language environment say by watching a TV/listening to a radio or staying in that place makes a real real difference as it gives an opportunity to learn fast.
