Would you ever use "Mes compliments" to greet anybody? Is it too formal?

thank you for your post.
Mes compliments is not too formal, it actually isn't a greeting but giving a compliment. For example: a friend introduces me to her very smart and good looking boyfriend. To congratulate her, I'll say "mes compliments", a bit as a joke.
If you want to greet someone in a VERY formal way, you could say "salutations". Most people just say "bonjour" or "bonsoir".
