When should I use salut or bonjour? I am not sure if one is less formal or should be used with people you know well?

Salut Kelly, French say "bonjour" to mean "hello", "good morning", or "good afternoon". "Salut" is an informal greeting used between friends, it's like saying "hi" in English. "Bonsoir" is used to greet people after dark. I hope this helps :)

I always considered Salut to be a direct translation to Salute in English, though the term is not usually used in the same context I have experienced it used on leaving a restaurant, the host shouted out Salut as we left so presumably it can be used as a general "Salute" rather than only as a greeting?
