How can you improve an old memory, to remember new words?

Me and my wife are retired and are learning better french, but due to our age we have some problems retaining what we learn. Which french wine do we have to drink to improve our memories? :) :) we will be visiting a french Family in Paris in June 2013. They do not speak english , but are trying to learn. We really have talk to them in french, that is what you do when invited into a house. the old saying "when in Rome, do as the romans do" Or in this case " when In France , speak french" for a start it is more fun this way . we have been in France before and just managed to get by, but this time we like to lift the game , so we can communicante well. If this is not encouragement to work hard , then I don't know what is. Bon chance et a bientôt

bonjour! I find it kind of hard to remember new vocabulary too.especially due to confusion with gender! :S So I learn the word first and then learn the gender of it afterward... I also listen to the audio as many times as you can..listen to your previous lessons like once a week or so to prevent forgetting what you have learned....:) so basically repetition is the best way to retain what you learn... J’espère que ça aid! bonne chance!

Hi there - I agree with Armandip1, repetition is a large part of retaining the words and phrases that you will need. Further to that regular (daily) study of even one lesson will help an awful lot. Making use of your commute, or other activities where you can just listen to the audio lessons is also recommended. French wine usually has the opposite effect when it comes to memory retention :) There are a bunch of other tips in the My Toolbox section, in particular the Advanced Learning techniques articles.

Bonjour à tous! I just have a wee tip which has helped a lot of other. I find that when people are learning a new language that putting labels on things around the house in French helps a lot. It helps to see it everyday and for example if you were to go the laundry to do some washing you would find the label on the door saying "La Laverie" with maybe a few useful phrases underneath to prepare you for similar situations in France where you may need to ask if you can do washing or how the washing machine works. I hope this helps! - Marie-Claire

I had studied French for about 3 years but now, I'm away from it since 2009. What I want is either studying from online websites or practicing with aficionados or native French speakers.

Hi Chris - I would recommend reading through the Advanced Learning Techniques, a series of articles available under the My Toolbox link in your account. There are plenty of things to try that may help with the learning process.

What I find helpful is reading written material and watching videos with the subtitles in the language you are studying and using goggle translate to check words you do not know. The more you see the same words the easier it is to remember. It takes a lot of practice

Bonjour à tous! I find the best way to learn new words and vocabulary is to learn them by context. Memorizing a list of new words is not necessarily a good way because it only makes a single connection in the brain, however, learning words in context or with mnemonics you are more likely to remember the words and how to use them. I would suggest looking for new words in movies and books in conjunction with the RocketLanguage course. The more sources you can draw on, the more efficacious your language learning process will be. Keep up the good work! - Marie-Claire
