Hallo, meine Name ist Angela.. im 23 yrs old from the Philippines.. why i want to learn German? the first reason why i want to learn German because i am working as a food server in a restaurant which owned by a German guy..So almost all our customers are German...the funny thing why i got interested to learn their language its because i really wondered how they talk/speak while they dont open their mouth much  ... Well, the way the Filipino talk are really different..the motion of our mouth and the facial expession and of course the sound...so by then,i started search free german lesson thru net and buy books and ask questions to our few customers..But then,as i working,my friend introduced me to a German guy which is now my boyfriend for almost a year now.. and because of that,it push me to learn German eagerly to know him very well-his culture-his country.. Actually,i can say i dont need it because he speak excellent english and the accent too, because he work in US before..But i still want to learn it because maybe someday we will go to his place for a visit and so that i can communicate to his family and friends since they dont speak english.. I am hoping that in this forum and in this Rocket German you"ll help me to learn the German Language very well...

I want to learn German because I want to keep my mind active and challenged now that I have retired. I suppose Spanish would have been a more practical choice because it is widely spoken in the many parts of the US. However, I chose German because it is my heritage, well German and Austrian not to put too fine a point on it. I've visited Germany twice and plan to go back again and maybe include Austria and Switzerland as well.

I'm of German heritage. It's something I've always wanted to learn. And if I don't start now, then when? Byron, I understand about Spanish being more practical. I'm a teacher in Texas and several of the parents of my students only speak Spanish. Learning Spanish is on the "to do" list as well. :)

Wanting to is all the reason you need. There is something about wanting to understand your roots. My father, although born in the US, grew up learning to speak German before English because that was all that was spoken at home. Unfortunately, that wasn't continued when I was raised except for my Grandmother who would use a lot of German words interspersed with English.

Greetings all! (especially Byron!) I can not always reply due to my heavy work schedule. (That is why Rocket Languages is so great, you can do it on your own schedule!) I would like you to know that I really appreciate the fact that so many of us want to learn German with no apparent reason to others. ( My Dad asks me all the time, "Why (the hell) do you want to speak German?) (My Mom is really proud of me, as she knows our German ancestry.) The best answer that I can give to anyone asking why I want to learn German is: It is something I have always wanted to do! Thanks to all of you in this Forum! Doug!

I am learning German because my husband speaks it very well (he studied it in secondary school and university and did a semester abroad at a German university) and we both have German ancestry. We just completed a trip to Germany and Switzerland and I started studying German about six months before to prepare for that. The German speakers I've met have all been impressed with well I can speak given the short time frame I've been studying. It's also a lot of fun to talk with my husband since he can help me with pronunciation and grammar. I studied Spanish for four years at secondary school and university and Russian for a couple of years at university but never had anyone to practice with so my skills have gotten very rusty. I plan to keep learning languages so when my German gets to a certain level of proficiency I want to go back and get my Spanish back up to snuff and maybe try something new like Arabic. It looks like Rocket Languages may be adding Russian soon so maybe I'll try that one out to as a refresher. I really like how Rocket Languages puts such a big emphasis on speaking and listening because those have always been my weak points in other languages.

Interesting, the different reasons for people to learn German. My interest was activated in High School when we had a German exchange student live with us from Kassel, Germany; then college where I clepped (College level examination program - I think) where I received 24 credit hours for the German I knew then. Now married to a fine German lady for the past 43 years. Didn't do much with using the language as English was so much more convenient. but getting into it again is interesting now

I agree that Spanish is the most practical second language for an American, but we all have different considerations, as these posts suggest. My grandfather was German, and was brought to America as a child. He died before I was born, and while growing up, I always felt a "void" in my life, having never known him. I didn't take German in school, but as an adult, I began to do the self-study thing. Later, I was fortunate enough to meet a German lady who'd been a teacher, and she gave me private instruction for about a year and a half. I've been able to visit Germany several times, and have even visited the small village near Kassel, as well as Essen and Wesel, where my grandfather's family came from. The study of the German language, as well as German history and culture, has helped me fill that void I experienced as a child, and has given me a much greater understand of my heritage.

I want to learn German for several reasons. One is that it is part of my heritage, along with many other nationalities. Another is that I want to visit Germany some day and want to be able to communicate in their language. I had one semester of German in college and learned some German along with my son for a few semesters of homeschooling. My son had three years of college German and I am now ahead of where he ever was, but we can speak to each other fairly well and do so quite often. I love the sound of the language and the culture of intelligence among the German people. The fact that so very many of them also speak fluent English is very admirable. That is evident when you see translations all the time in America into Spanish and French, but rarely into German ... I'm sure it's because the Germans also speak English. I want to return the favor and learn their language. Oh, and German food is awesome ... one of the reasons I so very much want to visit there.
