Adverbs - TMP - curious

xocwjjbWed, 08 Jul 2009 00:31:30 -0500
Hello. I have an old German grammar from my childhood (over 40 years ago.). While all modern grammars (including of course RG) show adverb order as time, manner, place, this old book says time, place, manner. The example given is [color=#0000BF:38enpki5]Wir haben morgens im Hause schwer gearbeitet.[/color:38enpki5]. My question is, was this always wrong or has German changed in the last forty years ? (it seems unlikely that such a fundamental thing would change)

Many thanks for answering my curiousity. Perhaps I should throw away this relic from my childhood?

Hi Caroline,

that is very interesting.
The example sentence that you have given sounds old fashioned to me.
Nowadays you don't use "im Hause" in Hochdeutsch anymore.
You would say "im Haus".
"Im Hause" is something my grandparents might say, so you see....language changes with time.

I would say: Morgens haben wir im Haus schwer gearbeitet.
But then agian this TMP or TPM rule doesn't work if you want to emphasis something in particular, for example

Im Haus haben wir morgens schwer gearbeitet - the focus is on the fact that the work was done in the house and not in the garden

Morgens haben wir im Haus schwer gearbeitet - the focus is on the time

I hope that helps
