I am a bit confused I guess. Sabine says to Andreas "Ich helfe dir." But shouldn't "dich" be there instead of "dir", since "you" is a direct object in that sentence. Help!

Hi Bob, I think I can answer that. There are some German verbs that always take the dative case instead of the accusative. I have no idea why.. Helfen is one of them. There are probably a couple of dozen others and you can look them up on Google. I haven't gotten through Platinum yet so I don't know if that is discussed or not. If it weren't for the grammar, German would be relatively easy.
