Possessive Pronouns

Hello, can you help with possessive pronouns? If one were talking about a house, would one say "Das ist meines[/color:3pblj3wc]" and "Ihr Haus ist grösser als das meinige[/color:3pblj3wc]", or does one use "meins[/color:3pblj3wc]" in both examples? Also, how is it declined?

(If you could tell me which section in the RG grammar notes covers this, that might answer all my questions. I haven't found it yet, but that may be because American grammar terms are different than the English ones I learned fifty years ago. What I think of as a possessive adjective, eg. my, his, our, seems to be considered a possessive pronomen in American grammar books I have consulted.)

Many thanks to anyone who can help.
Caroline

Hi Caroline,

thank you for your post.

You would say:
Das ist mein Haus or Das ist meins.
Ihr Haus ist grösser als das meinige sounds very very posh and wouldn't be used, however it is correct.
It's much more common to say:
Ihr Haus ist grösser als meins.
Yes, we call them possessive pronouns.

Here are some examples:

Das ist meine Tante - this is my aunt
Das ist mein Onkel - this is my uncle
Das ist mein Boot - this is my boat
Ich liebe meinen Hund - I love my dog
Ich liebe meine Familie - I love my family

As you can see the changes depend on the case as well as on the gender.
Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks/ Danke
Paul
