beide/sowohl?

Kyle TTue, 22 Mar 2011 07:26:56 -0500
what is the difference between beide and sowohl if any? I know both are supposed mean "both" but are they interchangable? Examples in sentences would be helpful. Any information is much appreciated, thank you.

"Beide" is used as a pronoun/adjective and "sowohl" is a conjunction.
"Gib mir beide Zeitungen, bitte"- Give me both newspapers, please. It's used when you are talking about two nouns.

Whereas sowohl would be something like "Ich bin sowohl für als auch gegen den Krieg"- I am both for and against the war. It does not get declined as an adjective.
