Dear Nikita, In Chapter 1.3 Learning Hindi, the question 'Kya aap tayaar ho?' asked by Rohan confuses me of how exactly to use 'ho' and 'hain'. I understand that the pronoun 'aap' goes with 'hain' whereas 'tum' does with 'ho'. Please confirm me if I am right or wrong. Thank you in advance, EnDianPhile

It's not in the dialogue you referred to. It's in the explanation when they are reviewing the last chapter and just before they start the new one, Rohan asks "Kya aap tayaar ho?"

Your refering to hai (or hain if its nasaled)? If so, the ho and hai is used depending on the pronoun, so... aap = haiN (nasaled) tum = ho main = huuN - (also nasaled) yah = hai vah = hai ye = haiN ve = haiN (Note: Many speakers use ye (for both yah and ye) and vah (for both vah and ve) however it is often pronounced as "vo".

Hi EnDianPhile, You are right. app goes with hain and tum goes with ho. aap hain=you are(polite) tum ho=you are(familiar) This is a copy from Chapter 1.3 Learning Hindi. क्या आप तैयार हो? Kya aap tayaar ho? -incorrect grammar. Are you ready? Examples below are correct: क्या आप तैयार हैं? Kya aap taiyaar hain.(polite). Are you ready? -correct grammar. क्या तुम तैयार हो? Kya tum taiyaar ho.(familiar) Are you ready?-correct grammar. Thank you for your post. John
