namaskaar aap sab kaise haiM? Hope you are doing well with your Rocket Hindi. In this topic, let me give you some information about a festival in India. As you all know, India is a land of Festivals and Colors. February 12th, 2010 is a holiday in almost all part of India, as it is SHIVARATHRI, a holy day for the Hindus . There are so many interesting stories about the origin of this special day. One version says, this was the day when Lord Shiva performed the “Thandava” dance, a very masculine dance form. According to another version, it is the day on which Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi were married. Devotees either observe complete fasting or have fruits all day. They worship Lord Shiva throughout the day and night, without any sleep, and the ceremony ends on the following morning. Temples, schools and other community organizations arrange cultural programs all through the day to mark this pious occasion. Now, let me introduce some new Hindi words. Shiv = shiv शिव Parvathi = paarvathi पार्वति Festival = thyohaar त्योहार Story = kahaanee कहानी Devotee = bhakth भक्त Complete fasting = upavaas उपवास To worship = poojaa karnaa पूजा करना Temple – mandhir मन्दिर Hope this gave you some new information about the Indian culture and festivals. Keep learning! aapkee Nikita

Incorrect Transliteration: शिवरात्रि =SHIVARATRI not SHIVARATHRI शिव + रात्रि= Shiva + ratri ratri derives from Sanskrit meaning: night. In Hindi is रात=raat: night Parvathi = paarvathi पार्वति त=t not th therefore Paarvati not paarvathi Festival = thyohaar त्योहार tyohaar not thyohaar Devotee = bhakth भक्त bhakta not bhakth mandhir मन्दिर द=d not dh therefore मंदिर=mandir not mandhir
