kaise haiM aap? aapkee hindhee paDaaee kaisee chal rahee hai, yah jaanane kelie maiM uthsuk hooAO

[How are you? I am eager to know about your Hindi learning experience]

Have you noticed the above sentences, the Romanized Hindi and its English translation?

Well, the Romanized Hindi sentence looks a bit longer than its English counterpart, doesn’t it?

Let’s have a look. First, we will find out the word by word meaning of the Hindi sentence.

I am quite confident that you know what is meant by “kaise haiM aap? “

Yes, you are right – How are you?

Now to the second sentence in Romanized Hindi.

apkee = your

hindhee paDaaee = Hindi learning

kaisee = how

chal rahee hai = going

yah = this

jaanane kelie = to know

maiM uthsuk hooAO= I am eager

We got the meaning of all words, so why can’t we put them all together?

“Your Hindi learning how going this to know I am eager”- how is that? Well- even if you can make out what it means, the structure is not at all good. This is what happens when we do a word by word translation. Each language has its own style and structure and we must try to use the innate composition while translating from one language to another.

Having talked about translation, why can’t we try to translate some English sentences to Hindi?

1- How are you?
2- How old are you?
3- What is your name?
4- Where are you from?
5- Where are you going?

You may have to refer to the Grammar and Culture lessons for tips. If you find it difficult, please do not hesitate to ask for help.

All the best!

aapkee

kaise haiM aap? kaise lagaa aapko aMgrezee se hindhee meM anuvaadh karnaa? aasaan yaa mushkil? mujhe zaroor bathaaiegaa!

How did you go with the translation? I am sure you rocked!

Would you like to have more English sentences to try? Well, before that, I think it is a good idea to look at the Devnaagari script for the introductory paragraph and new words.

Below you can see the first paragraph in actual Hindi script.

कैसे हैं आप? कैसे लगा आपको अंग्रेज़ी से हिन्दी में अनुवाद करना? आसान या मुश्किल? मुझे ज़रूर बताइएगा!

Now, the “DIFFICULT” words-

anuvaadh karnaa - अनुवाद करना = to translate

aasaan - आसान = easy

mushkil - मुश्किल = difficult

Here are some more small sentences that you can try to translate to Hindi:-

I am fine, thank you.

I am five years old

My name is Nikita

I am from India

I am going to the airport

Did you really try to translate the sentences/questions from the previous post? If so, you will find it easy to solve the new ones. Also they will be really useful to get engaged in conversation!

Here are the translations for the earlier “Puzzles”!

How are you = kaise haiM aap?

How old are you? = aap kithne saal kaa haiM?

What is your name? = aap kaa naam kyaa hai?

Where are you from? = aap kahaaAO se haiM?

Where are you going? = aap kahaaAO jaa rahe haiM?

Enjoy learning!
