Hi Ella

I'll give you the exact meanings in order:

1. Lie
2. Also
3. ने is not a word that translates out in English. It is used as a form of past tense in a sentence.
For example: मैं ने कुछ भी नहीं किया। "I didn't see anything."
4. infinitive of the verb "to do"

Hope this helps!

So, would पिय़ा be past tense for "to drink?"

Deven--3 देवन--३

Yes, however, it is spelled पिया instead of पिय़ा

मैं ने should be मैंने and it refers to 'I'
मैंने कुछ नहीं किया is 'I did not do anything'
ने is not a word in Hindi and it is neither used as/for past tense.

Sorry for the confusion about ने. This is a mistake that needs to be fixed in one of the language and culture lessons in the 4th module because some sentences have मैं and ने  separated and I thought that ने was a separate word.

Sorry for the confusion again.

Hi Deven,
We are all learners and it is perfectly normal to have gaps, which is part of learning.
Let's look forward to a more enriching learning experience.

Hi sudhanshu,

I was recently reading Hindi news and when I read a certain sentence, I found that ने was used as its own word.

Here is the sentence, it is a bit inappropriate so I'll take some words out:

'मां ने ****** नहीं *****, इसलिए मैं हूं'

Sorry for the inconvenience of the nature of the sentence. I had to take some words out.

Hi Daven,

It was an error.  ने is a word in Hindi but it does not have any bearing on the tense of a sentence.

For example:
 प्रधान मंत्री ने भाषण दिया translates to Prime Minister gave a speech.
ने indicates the doer/speaker/subject in the sentence.

माँ ने कहा कि वह अगले महीने गाँव जाएँगी translates to Mother said she will go to the village next month.

राम ने पढ़ाई की तैयारी शुरू की translates to Ram started preparing to study.

श्याम ने कमल की तरफ दोस्ती का हाथ बढ़ाया translates to Shyam extended his hand towards Kamal for friendship.

ने cannot be used with मैं in a sentence as two words. मैं ने आपको निमंत्रित किया था is incorrect.
When used with मैं, it has to be one word – मैंने meaning ‘I’.
So, the correct sentence in this case would be: मैंने आपको निमंत्रित किया था. This translates to: I had invited you.

I apologize for the confusion.

Okay, makes a bit more sense.
So  I/me could be
* मुझे
* मै
* मैने  ?

Two more questions.
1) Why would you choose to use one vs. another of these versions of I/me? Why are there so many different versions?
2) In all the Rocket Hindi lessons,  मै  and ने  are used separately, as different words; so why is that? Are they wrong? Here are some examples from the I Like Lesson (1.9)
~ मै ने कुछ भी नही सुना
~ मैं ने कुछ भी नहीं खाया
~ मैं ने नहीं देखा /देखी

Thank you!

1) Please give me some time to respond.

2) In all these cases it should be  मैने NOT मै  ने

मैने कुछ भी नही सुना
मैंने कुछ भी नहीं खाया
मैंने नहीं देखा /देखी

धन्यवाद
