I was intrigued to hear Alex say that North America is the only place they call it soccer. Not so. It's always been known as such here in Australia and in New Zealand and I expect there are other countries of English heritage that do the same. I'm told the name is derived from Association Football, as it was originally called. Those less than enamoured with this relatively new sport, particularly the rugby fraternity, abbreviated Association to 'soc'.

Ciao Myopic, you are correct : nowadays the word "soccer" is usually attributed to Americans but it's actually used in Australia, New Zealand and England too. Thank you very much for your clarification. A presto! Ciao
