Does anyone have any tips on how to "think" in Italian rather than translate an Italian phrase into English, and then construct a reply in English, then re-translating into Italian? I find this to be an obstacle for me. Conversion just doesn't work.
Is it only a matter of vocabulary and familiarity? Any drills or thoughts anyone has would be appreciated. I find I can read and understand Italian fairly well, given my current level, but listening and understanding is a challenge.

at the beginning it's normal that you translate literally from English.
Once you start to become more familiar with the vocabulary and in particular with some expressions, you will notice that it will be easier to express yourself in Italian.
I always recommend to keep practising as it is a very important step of the learning process.
If you have the possibility, I also suggest to read some books and watch programs on TV.

Grazie, io apprezzo i commenti e incorraggiamento. Sometimes it seems as though we're not making progress, but other times, it goes better. I will continue to practice, working on vocabulary, reading, and watching movies.

Before starting Rocket, I borrowed disc's on how to learn italian at our local Library. After a week I took it back as I couldn't understand or follow it.
Yesterday we had to travel (2 hours) into the city, so I got out the disc's again to have practice listening to other voices. To my surprise, I understood and followed the dialogue. My Husband kept asking what a word or phrase was and without much thought I was able to tell him. I HAD IMPROVED... WOOHOO!!!
In the Your Motivation section it suggests that we read or listen to something and then go back at a later date and reread or listen. You might just surprise yourself at what you've picked up.

In my experience, after a while of learning the language I start to translate things from English into Italian in my mind. It becomes habit after a while.
