Conjugating smettere

Jennifer KTue, 21 Jun 2011 12:21:44 -0500
In RI Premium Plus lesson 8.8 Verb Plus Preposition, in the Attivita section, Q.2 asks for the translation of "Stop playing and come for dinner" and the answer given is "Smettila di giocare e vieni a cena". How is "smettila" derived from smettere? What tense or form of the verb is this?

ciao Jennifer,

"smettila" is another way to express the imperative of the verb "smettere" and it means "stop" (to do something).

In fact you can either say:
-smetti di fumare
or
-smettila di fumare (stop smoking)

I hope this helps.
Ciao
