Indirect and Direct Object Pronouns

first we need to clarify that pronouns are used to replace nouns.
There are different type of pronouns .
In this case we need to distinguish the difference between the direct and the indirect object pronouns.

1. direct object pronouns are used to replace the object of the sentence.

For example:
-Io mangio la mela (I eat the apple) = la mela is the direct object
-Io la mangio (I eat it-it stands for the apple)

It answers to the question: “che cosa mangio io?’ (what am I eating?)

-Tu parli con Luigi (I speak to Luigi) = Luigi is the direct object
-Tu parli con lui (I speak to him -him stand for Luigi)

It answers to the question : “Con chi parli tu?” (who are you speaking with?)

Instead the indirect object pronouns are usually used after the preposition “a”.

For example:
-Io telefono a Giovanni (I phone –to- Giovanni )
-Io gli telefono (I phone him –him stands for Giovanni)

It answers to the question: “a chi telefona Maria?" (to whom does Maria phone?)
