lesson 3.1

Esther HTue, 31 May 2011 03:19:32 -0500
Hi, just a couple of questions about lesson 3.1. Why is the sentence Ma fa molto freddo and not ma e` molto freddo? Also, Porta il cappello. I thought that porta meant door? Thank you.

Ciao Esther,

when you speak about weather in English you normally use the verb "to be".
Example " it's cold","it's hot", "it's raining",etc.
In Italian we have different ways to express weather conditions.
Here below a list that can be useful:
-it's cold = fa freddo
-it's hot =fa caldo
-it's windy =c'è ventoso
-it's sunny = c'é il sole
-it's raining = piove
-it's snowy = nevica

You are correct : in Italian the word "porta" can be "door" or "gate" but also be the conjugation of the verb "portare", "to bring", "to wear","to take" depending on the contest of the sentence.
In the example above the sentence "porta il cappello" means "he /she wears a hut".

I hope this helps.
Buon divertimento with Rocket Italian.
Ciao

Ciao Mot,

I'd recommend to start with the audio couse lessons first.
Rocket Italian course has 33 audio tracks that train you how to talk in Italian.
Each of these tracks is accompanied by a written translation in English and Italian so you can keep up with the audio.
Once you get confident, I'd suggest to look at the grammar lessons.
If you have any enquiry, don't hesitate to post a message in the forum.
Buon divertimento.
Ciao
