If you are going to have a cell phone in Japan - there are several GPS software's you can install/buy.
One is called "NAVITIME"

Another one is called "ZENRIN datacom" by NTT DOCOMO.
It's only 315 yen a month for walking/driving/train/bus GPS navigation.
There's a free trial version as well.
