Does anyone know a good hiragana/romanji/english dictionary?

Lauren-san,

"Kodansha's Furigana Japanese Dictionary" has been a favorite amongst Japanese learners. Although this dictionary is not in Romaji - if you have familiarized yourself with Hiragana - then this is a fantastic Dictionary!

I would recommend that if you haven't gone through the Hiragana syllabaries, go over them and memorize them first. Then, you'll be able to check any work in the above dictionary while further improving your Hiragana skills.

If your looking for a good kanji dictionary... Kondansha's Kanji Learner's Dictionary is also another great suggestion. Seriously, I love this dictionary... if I was the least bit religious it'd be the equivalent of my "bible" until I fork out the $$ for an electronic dictionary or some better "pocket" dictionary.

"A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar" by "Seiichi Makino and Michio Tsutsui"

Grammar Dictionary, explains a lot about grammar including formal, non-formal and casual speaking and writing.

For example:

Embedded Sentance / A sentance within another sentance is an embedded sentence. The bold-faced part of each sentence below is is the embedded sentence. An embedded sentence is marked by a subordinate conjunction such as kara 'because', keredomo 'although', node 'because', noni 'although', to 'if', the quote marker #to 'that', a nominalizer (no or koto) or the head noun of a relative clause.

(a) 山田は頭が痛いと言った
yamada wa atama ga itai to itta.
(Yamada said that he had a headache)

It also list's particles etc in a romanised index.

For eg:

'ba' "a conjuction which indicates that the preceding clause expresses a condition"

With this it includes examples, sentance structures etc. Obviously du to the formatting limitations for these forums i cant show exactly how it looks.

kono kusuri o nome 'ba' yoku naru / narimasu
(If you take this medicine, you'll get well)

Its definatly a book to have, with about 620 pages it does contain a lot of information.
