OK I've noticed that ever since I took on learning the two smallest alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana) I've all but completely stopped with all my other Japanese lessons. Is that OK? Should I continue with my other lessons as well as learning the alphabets? Is learning the Japanese alphabets supposed to take a long time? Is learning the alphabets first better, or should I learn them along with my other Japanese lessons slowly?

There is no actual order of how to do things, but learning Hiragana and Katana first gives quite an advantage later on when you slowly start with kanji. This also helps you familiarize yourself with Kana within the lessons before starting with kanji which are a a lot more difficult to learn. There is absolutely no problem that you focus only on Kana and this shouldn't take too long. Let's estimate an average 2 weeks is perfect for learning kana, though you can accelerate or slow the process as you wish and take it at your own pace. For example I'm not able to stay too long on learning things and usually speed up the process, so I learned kana in one day. So don't worry, take your time to learn the charts after which you can continue with your lessons.
