Save username/password

jepatonSun, 28 Jun 2009 13:56:48 -0500
Hi,

I find that my username and password are not saved on the course login screen. Which
is unlike the majority of websites. It is a little annoying to be so readily logged out and
have to re-enter my full email address and password over and over.

For security reasons I do not use the same email address nor password for each site I
use - so I have to keep referring to my list of email address/password combinations.

... Take the time to memorize it?...

I mean, I actually like the fact that it logs me out so much, as it prevents my sister and brother from popping in my room and messing with my account....

Using the same e-mail address for logins isn't going to harm you, nor is using the same password...

If not, it might be smarter to just have 7 passwords of various security levels and as they go up the security latter they become longer and more random...

My friend's password is a hash of a hash of a hash of a hash of a hash of a hash of a hash of a 7 character word.

If you don't know what a hash is... It is the letters displayed when you try to view an encrypted data source. So something cheese might be Fg78so9Hfkd8SkxeDf6g7v8 IDK if that's a valid hash of cheese or not, but you get my point so imagine taking that and hasing it multiple times over... and etc.

He memorized that through repetition which is possibly the hardest thing to memorize in my opinion... so if he can memorize a hash of a hash x6... I think you can take the time to memorize a username and e-mail even if it is multiple e-mails/passwords for each site...

However if you really would rather not put forth the effort (that's fine, I don't care its your security flaw) then you can use a password manager that encrypts everything as well...

If anything having a list of e-mails and passwords on paper somewhere in your physical presence is the least secure choice of them all... they get a hold of your list and your ed.

I don't mean to be "down" your choice of security methods, I'm just trying to provide some solutions I think are secure to the point of overdoing it...

Dear Jonathan-san,

I understand your confusion over having to re-enter your details every time you want to open the Lounge.
However your browser should offer you an option to save the username and password for you, and pre populate the form fields next time they come back to the page.

Sayaka,

Unfortunately it does not pre-fill the fields, for me, using Internet Explorer 8. But
I have noticed that in Firefox it works as you describe.

I forgot to mention that it's worth logging in! Thanks.

Derek,

Interesting ideas.

The main reason I use different email addresses and passwords is because I don't
necessarily trust every site I use to look after my login credentials.

The second reason is to allow better filtering of my email as appropriate.

As you correctly point out the weak spot is the list, and the computer in general.
I have never made a hard-copy of my password list and never would.

Kind Regards,

I was sent a link saying that I was sent my password, but I did not receive the password.
