10.6 Comparison Expressions

皆さんこんにちは！ お元気ですか？ Moving along, to make sure I'm getting the より usage explained in 10.6 correct. 上げるほうが貰うより良いです。 ageru houga morau yori ii desu. Would be 「To give is better than to receive」. 近いほうが遠いです。 Chikai houga tooi yori ii desu. 「closer is better than farther.」 。 。 。 Is that correct or are my assumptions incorrect.

Derek-san, I see you are advancing in your Japanese! Omedeto :P And, you have clearly mastered the YORI expressions. Sugoi desu. Just an added note... you could switch the end to the front if you wished to do so. Such as saying: Tooi yori wa chikai hou ga ii desu. 遠いよりは近いほうがいいです。 Which translates equally to _"Closer is better than farther."_ Great job! :P

デレックsan, Excellent question (as always! :P ) *よい*(yoi) and *いい* (ii) are both adjectives that mean _"good/fine/okay."_ And while *いい* (ii) is the more common form, the adjective *よい*(yoi) can become an adverb *よく*(yoku) - such as when saying *よくたべる*(yoku taberu) meaning _"eat well/thoroughly/a lot"_ while *いい* (ii) cannot transform to become *いく*(iku) - there is no such Japanese. So, the adverb form of *よい*(yoi) and *いい* (ii) is always *よく*(yoku), which stems from *よい*(yoi). Another thing to note is that *よい*(yoi), like most Japanese adjectives have a past tense - *よかった*(yokatta) _"was good"_ while there is no such Japanese as *いかった*(ikatta). Actually I was asking more "why kana form vs. kanji form?" but that was just as helpful （＾－＾）. I hadn't known よい and いい came from the same stem... 面白いですね。 またね、 デレック

Oops... my apologies. Well 良い can be read both as よいand いい. There is no reason why I chose to write in KANA instead of KANJI! :shock:
