Shirimasen and shiranai Shirimasen deshita and shirana katta what's the difference between these words? I know it's meaning is the same so which one can we use?

I just learned this in Japanese class earlier today. If I can remember correctly, Shirimasen is a more polite way and shiranai is more of a way you'd talk to your friends. Yes, they do both mean the same. Cheers
