Is "Hanase masu ka?" means "Do you"?

Konnichiwa, "hanase masu ka" actually means "do you speak" or "can you speak."

Thanks, but what about "Hanase masu"? instead of "ka"?

Hanase masu would be "I am speaking" or could vary by the subject depending on the context.

Kingdom-san, Derek-san Konnichiwa! Just as Derek-san has kindly explained... *Hanase masu* is the __potential _masu_-form__ (or as I like to call it, the "I can" form) of *Hanasu* "To speak" Unlike in English, where you add a "can" or "be able to" before an action word - such as "I can go," "She is able to sing," "We can jump" - Japanese has its own verb form for saying that you can do an action. For verbs ending in _*RU*_ (example: *tabe__ru__*, *mi__ru__*) the __CAN__ form is made by replacing the final _*-ru*_ with _*-rareru*_ or in formal context _*-raremasu*_. *taberu* ("eat") → *taberareru/taberaremasu* ("can eat") *miru* ("see") → *mirareru/miraremasu* ("can see") For verbs ending in _*U*_ (example: *asob__u__*, *nom__u__*, *hanas__u__*) the __CAN__ form is made by changing the final _*-u*_ with _*-e[b]_ and adding _[b]-ru[b]_ or in formal context _[b]-masu*_. *asobu* ("play") → *asoberu/asobemasu* ("can play") *nomu* ("drink") → *nomeru/nomemasu* ("can drink") *hanasu* ("speak") → *hanaseru/hanasemasu* ("can speak") In conclusion - *Hanase masu* - on it's own translates as _"Can speak"_ and with the question particle *KA* attached to it, we get → *Hanase masu ka?* meaning _"Can you speak?"_ -Sayaka :P

In order to write in Japanese you'll need to have a language pack installed on your computer. The language pack will allow you to change the language you want to type in and also the "input mode," so you can insert hiragana, katakana and kanji characters directly into forum posts. Language packs are free to download, but you will need to get the right one for your computer's operating system. You can search Microsoft Help pages for more details. From the Rocket Japanese Team Demonik Derek-san found a site that "shows you/teaches you how to type in Japanese using your English keyboard": http://www.coscom.co.jp/japanesefont/in ... llime.html :P -Sayaka
