From my understanding tabete = te is kinda like "ing" in english so it would be like "eating". tabemasu = is the polite form of tabe "to eat" Someone correct me if I am wrong but this is the impression that I have got.

*Tabete* and *Tabemasu*: Konnichiwa! *Tabete* and *Tabemasu* comes from the same verb "to eat" - *Taberu. * When verbs end in *TE*, often called the te-form, it is used in combination with other verbs. Like, *TabeTE iru*. "I am eating". *Tabete *can also be used by itself, as an informal request. The *MASU* ending on the other hand makes the verb affirmative and polite. *TabeMASU* would then translate as "I eat".
