うち vs いえ

What is the difference between うち and いえ?
コッドFri, 10 Jun 2011 15:40:47 -0500
they are written with the same character: 家 and are just different readings of it...
But I don't know exactly if there is a meaningful difference between the two readings, but anyway, they both mean "home"

@Elena S @コッド

Uchi is used for your own house, while ie can be used to refer to any house.

Eg. Uchi ni ikitai? "You wanna go (come) to my house?"

Ano ie wa dasakute, mazui desu ne? "That house is unstylish and ugly isn't it?"

Hope that helps.

what is the difference between むかい and むこう
Pascal PThu, 22 Sep 2011 23:23:40 -0500
mukai means "opposite" while "mukou" means beyond. Simple!

actually i think you're wrong with the japanese word for opposite. cause if you saw in lesson 2.1 then opposite is "hantai" and the opposite side is "hantai gawa"
Pascal PWed, 12 Oct 2011 02:26:08 -0500
Nope:
Hantai & Mukai both mean "opposite". They are synonyms.

Hantai can mean opposite not only in position, but as in an opponent, or the opposite as in a contradicotry.

Mukai is more restricted to opposite as in "Opposite the bank".

hope this helps.

Pascal-san is right here.

Just think of "hantai" as something contradictory, and it can be used almost at anything, while "mukai" and "mukou" are restricted only to direction/location.
