Forum Rocket Japanese Japanese Vocab Why is shimasu used in this sentence?

Why is shimasu used in this sentence?

Stefan-Minehan

A flashcard stated Kore wa ii nioi ga shimasu

This is a nice smell.

Why is shimasu used here with ga also. I thought shimasu was a kind of 'doing' word?

Thanks

Hi Stefan,

"shimasu" is the formal form of the verb "suru(to do)" and this has many extended uses and this is one of them. You could look into these extended uses of "suru". It will help you understand. It will be useful too!

Like in this example, you use "ga suru" to mean feel/smell/hear. You use "ga suru" with a phrase related to your senses to say "to appear/appear to be/to affect the sense".
