I have answered few posts about Korean pronunciation.
I have realized that I need to clarify something so I am putting a post about one exception to Korean pronunciation rule.
I have mentioned that there is no exception when it comes to reading Korean, and it is read just as how it is written.
I have to take this back, as there is one exception.
In Korean language except for consonant with double consonant rules (ex: ㄱㄲ ㄷㄸ ㅂㅃ ....), two different consonant cannot be used together. However, there is one position where it can be used, "the bottom."
For example, 없다, ㅄ is in the bottom of 어. Two different consonants can be used in this position only.
When double consonants are used, you only pronounce the first consonant. So, in this case 없다, you only pronounce 어(uh) ㅂ(b) = 업 uhb.
Another example is 앉다(to sit). 아 ah + ㄴ(n) = ahn, so it becomes ahn da. The second consonant becomes silent.
However, there is another rule for this case.
If a double consonant case is followed by ㅇ, the second consonant sound replaces ㅇ.
Example,
없어지다 (to be gone, to disappear), you can see that there is double consonant and 어 follows it. Since there is ㅇ right after it, the second consonant from ㅄ which is ㅅ, replaces the sound of ㅇ
없 UHB 어UH 지JI 다DA seems to be pronounced UHB UH JI DA, but since ㅅ replaces ㅇ, it becomes UHB SUH JI DA. (업서지다)
This is one of the tricky cases in Korean, but I hope people understands this case
