m or b

Yee HanFri, 29 Jul 2011 09:51:14 -0500
hi there, is ㅁ supposed to be pronounced as a "m" sound or "b" sound? e.g. when i hear Koreans say "what", it sounds like baw instead of maw. Thanks.

안녕하세요 Yee Han!

ㅁ = "m"
ㅂ = "b"

The letters ㅁ and ㅂ sometimes sound similar when native Koreans speak fast but they are two different sounding letters!

Also, when the letter ㅂ precedes ㄴ, it makes an ㅁ ("m") sound. So for example:

수정 입니다 (I am Sujung) is pronounced "imnida" and not "ibnida". It would be hard to pronounce it otherwise!

I hope this helps - let me know if you have any more questions
