I am trying to find the correct spanish noun for a print, as in a photographic print made from a negative through a light source and developed chemically. My dictionary has many definitions for various kinds of prints, including positivo, which seems to refer to a photographic print, and given the process, makes the most sense.

My question got covered up by a response to another post, so I thought I would give it a bump up top again in hopes someone can give me an answer...

Hola Dan, This is from my two dictionaries, hard back, not online. Merriam Webster under print: copia (en fotografía) Oxford: copia también, referring to a print of a movie or photo. Under positivo, both say print of a photo. The Oxford is much larger and extensive and I usually only refer to it if I don't find something in the Merriam or seek something more detailed. Perhaps there is some other word used within the profession not listed in the dictionary but I don't know it and this probably wasn't much help. Perhaps Cristian will answer this. Saludos, Ricardo

Dan, can you not just use foto or fotografía?

Jefe: yes I could, and in most circumstances it would be appropriate and accurate. But what I was trying to do was to convey to the other people in the group a more specific idea. In the old-school photography that I do, I print, or make a print from, a negative. It is about the process as well as the product. Maybe it is a distinction without a difference, but people like me who spend lots of time in dark rooms smelling chemicals tend to be that way. For the moment I am happy with the word "positivo." Later this year I will have the opportunity to talk with Spanish-speaking photographers and can ask them what they call their prints.

I too enjoy photography, but I've never done any dark room developing. Your question prompted me to do some searching and I was surprised at how little I found in the way of specific photography Spanish vocab. I'm definitely interested in what the Spanish-speaking photographers have to say.
