De Nada vs Por Nada

I've been to Spanish speaking countries a few times and I'm not quite sure of the difference between the two ways of someone responding to a thank you. Generally when I would say gracias to someone they would respond with the expected de nada, occasionally I would hear por nada. What is the difference between the two?

Hola Adrian, Ambos son igual. Es distinto de región a región pero de nada es mas común. Pero no se usa "por nada" en España. They are the same. It's different from region to region but de nada is more common. But por nada is not used in Spain. I have used both when I speak in a restaurant or store with Mexicans and folks from Central America and I have heard both used. I have a brother in law that lived in Mexico for 10 years and he uses both. This is my understanding, like por la tarde or en la tarde Perhaps Cristian Montes de Oca our native speaker will give us his take on this. Saludos, Rich

Gracias senor, I was concerned that perhaps I was getting the cold shoulder from the server. A woman I met on my travels insisted that por nada was not the right thing to say but could not tell me why, as her english skills were not quite good enough to get into advanced concepts, and my spanish was almost non existent at the time, not that I know much more now, but I will!

Hola! En México we use both, i will have to check all th vocabulary rules for spanish to decide if one of the expressions is incorrect, the way i see it, both, "por nada" and" de nada" are a way of saying "there is nothing you need to thank for" or literally "for nothing/because of nothing"...if i find any other info i,ll write it down for you meanwhile feel free to use both of them as you like! I preffer "de nada" but that is just what most people use in my town!...have a nice day saludos desde Mexico nos vemos pronto

Gracias Cristian, I appreciate the additional information about this. I also prefer de nada as I personally would find it a little rude being told por nada. Perhaps it's a contextual thing. The man in question who said por nada to me was a bartender and I did not give him a tip on this particular occasion as I had tipped him several times previously, and I am quite certain on those occasions he did say de nada. De nada it is for me.
